The Fall Writing Frenzy is my very first writing competition. Thank you to Kaitlyn Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis for organising it.
The challenge: Write 200 words maximum based on one of 13 Fall themed photos.
This is the image I chose to base my entry off. My piece is titled ‘The Fall’.
THE FALL
The sky glowed amber as the sun peeked over the horizon.
Yawning, the little leaf stretched in the breeze. And that’s when he saw it—the faintest orange spot.
It had begun.
“Will it hurt, Mama?” the little leaf asked the tree that gave it life.
“No, my dear,” she replied. “You were created for this.”
Each day, the color spread until the little leaf could no longer see a speck of its usual green hue.
He admired his now golden centre, radiating through to shades of red and orange, matching the fading light.
One day, the little leaf felt a crisp breeze that rustled through the branches, washing over him.
It was nearly time.
Faintly he heard, “Bye!” The first leaf to leave the tree. It danced in the breeze, twisting and twirling, swishing and swirling.
The little leaf felt a tingle in his stem.
Excitement and nerves quivered through his veins
Swept up in the breeze, carried high above the treetops, he witnessed the most beautiful thing: A sea of red, orange and yellow on a canvas of blue.
The little leaf realised he was part of something larger, something beautiful. He was created for this; The Fall.
GORGEOUS! And so poignant & kid-relatable. You’ve got a nice voice going here with the little leaf being nervous about the change and the mom/tree’s reassurance. Good luck in the contest.
So cute! What a fun perspective! Good luck!
This is so cute. You got us invested in a *leaf*. Wow. Well done.
Awe-this is the sweetest perspective. I never thought of how the little leaf might feel when it’s finally time to Fall! Great job!:)
Such a sweet rendering of the life cycle of a leaf. Nice job!
Beautiful story.
This is such a gorgeous story, Kelly! It reads beautifully and made me feel all warm and fuzzy <3
I really enjoyed this:) “The little leaf realized he was part of something larger, something beautiful. He was created for this; The Fall.” Great last line:)
Sweet story. So kid relatable. It reminded me of the picture book, Little Tree by Loren Long.
